On October 26, OpenAI released GPT-6.1 Terra in ChatGPT Work, Codex, and the API for screen-based work such as reading interfaces and completing forms. Standard API pricing is $1 per million input tokens, $0.05 per million cached input tokens, and $5 per million output tokens. OpenAI says those rates are 50% below GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-6.1 Sol.

For product teams, Terra adds a lower-cost routing tier. High-volume work such as invoice entry or form completion may not need the same model as difficult coding. OpenAI still recommends Sol or Astra for its hardest coding tasks. Teams should route by task, not migrate everything at once.

Test one task class with real sessions. Compare accepted outcomes, elapsed time, operator intervention, and total cost with the model you use now. Require approval for consequential actions. Record state before each action, and decide in advance when the workflow should stop or call a stronger model. OpenAI's benchmarks are useful evidence, but they do not establish reliability or permission safety inside your product.

Retries and human cleanup can wipe out a lower token bill. Move a task to Terra when it clears a declared quality threshold at a lower cost per accepted outcome.
