Agent Skills Gets a Vendor-Neutral Home

Anthropic has moved Agent Skills into foundation governance, but portability still has to be tested.

On October 22, Anthropic donated the Agent Skills name and logo, GitHub organization, and agentskills.io domain to the Agentic AI Foundation under the Linux Foundation. The format packages instructions in a SKILL.md file, alongside optional scripts and references, to teach an agent a task or domain.

The standard now has a vendor-neutral governance home. Product teams can version operating procedures outside a base prompt, then test them across compatible agents. Anthropic reports that more than 70 platforms have integrated the standard since December 2025. That is evidence of adoption, not equivalent behavior across those products.

Tools, authentication, permissions, and execution still vary. Skills can contain scripts, so provenance checks and code review matter. Versioned releases, a formal proposal process, and security guidance are proposed next steps rather than finished safeguards.

Start with one low-risk workflow. Separate the procedure from vendor-specific tool calls, pin the skill version, and run it across two supported agents. Compare accepted outputs, permission behavior, and maintenance effort. A file loading successfully does not establish that the workflow moved successfully.
